A local care home provider’s virtual food cruise has been so successful among hundreds of residents living with dementia that plans for a new one in 2019 are being finalised.
Hull-based Hica Group introduced the initiative, which has seen them host a virtual visit to a different country each month as part of a new approach to improving the wellbeing and enjoyment of residents.
The initiative, which has been rolled-out across its care home network and domiciliary care services, has proved popular, enabling people to find out more about countries they may have only read about in books or seen on the TV.
Italy, Romania and Russia are among those countries to have featured on the virtual voyage of discovery in the past 12 months, as residents took in the culture aspects including music, food and drink - even traditional clothes - at every port of call.
Apetito, Hica’s catering partner, has also been involved in the initiative, teaming up with the care homes to provide country-specific meals and menus throughout the duration.
Now, Hica is planning to launch another cruise in 2019 as part of a series of activities to deliver improved standards of care for residents, placing it apart from other care home providers.
Terry Peel, managing director at The Hica Group, said: “It has been lovely to see the positive impact that the cruise has had on everyone. We’ve decorated their homes with country flags and balloons, helped them cook meals, and even created their own themed postcards.
“Activities like these are highly beneficial, improving the time residents have with us while distinguishing our service from other providers. Staff have also enjoyed taking part and can see the huge difference it makes to the people they care for.”
The Hica Group is a not for profit organisation, which operates a portfolio of 15 care homes across Hull and the East Riding. The company also runs two retirement villages and a homecare service which provides approximately 11,500 hours of support from four regional offices in the north of England.
