Salford social enterprise has been shortlisted in the National Dementia Care Awards

A Salford social enterprise has been selected for the final of a national dementia awards competition.

Six Degrees, based in Salford, has been shortlisted for the Best Training Initiative category in the National Dementia Care Awards 2019 for their communications workshops for carers of people living with dementia.

The Empowered Conversations workshops have been delivered to 228 family carers across Greater Manchester thanks to a Big Lottery funded programme and has now been adapted to support professionals from a range of organisations - including Age UK Salford and the Welsh Ambulance Service – making a total of 520 people having the training to date. The course is also being evaluated in partnership with the University of Salford.

Dr Phil McEvoy, chief executive of Six Degrees, said: “We are absolutely delighted - the team work incredibly hard to deliver workshops that offer carers a unique opportunity to have a space to pause, reflect and change their attitudes in order to maintain relationships with loved ones living with the disease.

“We are blown away on a weekly basis by the feedback we get from course attendees, so it’s great to receive this recognition from the National Dementia Care Awards.”

Winners of the National Dementia Care Awards will be presented with their trophies at a Gala Night held on Thursday, November 7 at Doncaster Racecourse, which will be attended by over 400 guests.

The National Dementia Care Awards is an annual event organised by The Journal of Dementia Care, a multidisciplinary journal for all professional staff working with people with dementia, in hospitals, nursing and residential care homes, day units and the community.

The awards were created to recognise the very best people in the dementia care sector, whose exceptional work and contributions make better, person-centred care a reality.
